PERSONALITY: Ruby is best described as... a woobie.

Hopefully you can forgive the pun, but the trope really does fit her well. Ruby is very much a crybaby, and is easily the most child-like member of Aqours. Her nature makes her out to be someone that needs to be protected and coddled, and that honestly isn't too far off of an assumption. She is incredibly shy to a fault (to the point where she will shriek and hide if taken off guard or startled), and frequently laments to herself about her own clumsiness. That being said, Ruby doesn't try to take advantage of or profit off of these traits. In fact, she actively wants to change and grow away from them and become more independent.

Unfortunately, the process of becoming more independent takes some time. At the beginning of the series, Ruby is only just beginning to discover herself. When she is introduced, her motivations are constantly characterized by her two closest relationships - Hanamaru and Dia - but eventually begin to shift towards her own dreams and desires. Prior to joining Aqours, Ruby would only make decisions if they were approved and supported by her sister and best friend. She is initially hesitant in joining the group at all, due to Dia's apparent hatred for school idols and Hanamaru's belief that she herself wasn't suited to join along with her. Though it's clear through Ruby's actions that she desperately wants to become an idol, she holds herself back for their sakes. However, she eventually finds her voice through joining Aqours - she both defies her sister's wishes and convinces Hanamaru to muster up her own self-confidence and join the group with her.

That being said, Dia and Hanamaru still play incredibly significant roles in Ruby's life while in Aqours. Dia continues to be a reliable older sister for Ruby to be dependent on, even though she is beginning to take on tasks and challenges that are independent from her. Ruby frequently finds herself coddled and comforted by her, but it isn't something that she particularly shies away from - if anything, being in Aqours together has rekindled their close sibling relationship since Dia's failed attempt at becoming a school idol. Ruby cares for her sister more than anyone, and as seen when Chika seeks to pry into her past as an idol, tries to protect her in her own quiet way. Hanamaru, on the other hand, remains Ruby's closest friend and confidante. She initially gives Ruby the push and confidence she needs to join Aqours on her own terms, even if it meant her going somewhere that she felt she couldn't follow. Initially deciding to do an activity without her best friend was a big step for Ruby to take, but being able to enjoy idol activities together makes it all the more dream-fulfilling for her.

Over her time with Aqours (starting in Season 2 of the anime), Ruby slowly begins to mature into a more confident person. Though she is still incredibly shy and prone to skittishness at the drop of a hat, she develops more of a playful personality that is most easily seen when she is surrounded by people that she trusts. This is most easily seen in regards to Yoshiko's "fallen angel" antics, which are frequently received with snarky comments by her and Hanamaru. The catalyst to this personality development comes to an apex during a group trip to Hakodate, where Ruby and her friends watch rival idol group Saint Snow perform. It is there that she begins to not only butt heads with fellow little sister Leah Kazuno, who brings out Ruby's feistier side when she contests who loves their older sister more. During this trip of reflection about herself and her future, she comes to terms with the fact that Dia will soon be graduating, thereby forcing her to stop relying on her older sister as their time as school idols comes to an end. Eventually she and Leah find that they have more in common than previously assumed, and Ruby makes a vow to become her own independent person and achieve things that would make Dia proud of her. 

Although Ruby is clumsy, easily influenced, and not the most dependable person to complete a task, this does not take away from her determination to better herself and do her best - or her "rubesty", as her catchphrase implies! Her passions and drive truly shine when she is on stage as an idol, but also off-stage as a co-costume designer for Aqours. She's a little more than just a one-off moe trope - as she gets to know others and becomes more comfortable with her surroundings, Ruby's playful side comes out. Her work as a school idol has taught her how to slowly come out of her shell and grow into the world as an individual, thereby experiencing new things and facing them with confidence.

CRAU INFO: Ruby is coming from a Spellbind CRAU! As such, she'll be fairly familiar with the concept of world-hopping by the will of a mysterious witch, but will not be happy about it. Her first and only hop outside of SB's hub consisted of her getting kidnapped and tortured for not being able to control her magic; returning to that isn't exactly high on her priority list.
MAGIC ABILITY: Invisibility: In line with her incredibly shy personality, Ruby will be able to make herself invisible at will. However, it isn't a "true" invisibility - it only makes her hidden from visual perception. She can still be heard and touched, and seeing as Ruby herself is by no means a ninja, it wouldn't be very hard to sense her presence. She'll also be able to share this ability with anyone she has extended physical contact with (such as hand-holding), at the price of some of her stamina.

Though Aqours has plenty of different outfits that they wear for their live shows, Mijuku DREAMER is the first song that they perform as a full group of nine. Specifically, this is the first outfit that Ruby was able to wear while performing alongside Dia. It represents the first real step towards achieving her dream of becoming a school idol, and being able to do so with her older sister by her side means the world to her.

ACCLIMATION: A weak 2. Being from an incredibly normal, slice of life canon in addition to her general scaredy-cat nature, Ruby isn't going to be able to survive on her own without relying heavily on the kindness of others. Having her big sister around will definitely help her feel more comfortable, but being away from home and surrounded by strangers without Hanamaru by her side is going to make her want to cry. Constantly.
